Boasting a Country Park with plenty of space for family games and picnics, Carsington is a great place for a family day out. There is a sailing club and trout fishery for those looking for an activity to get involved with and a recently refurbished visitor centre and brand new children’s play area. Dogs and barbeques are welcome in the Country Park.

The Peak District is a well-known destination for caving and to a lesser degree pot holing. Due to the limestone the area has several natural caves one being the Peak Cavern, which is probably the largest and most important cave in the area. Other caves are Thor’s Cave, Manifold and Dove Holes caves to mention but a few.

Many like the Peak Caverns have extensive systems but in the case of the Peak Cavern it actually links up with the Speedwell Cavern system near Winnats Pass.

If you fancy a day fishing then there are several stunning river and still water locations available for both day tickets and fishing lessons. Whether it’s trout or carp, coarse or fly fishing, there are several miles of premium fishing sites in and around the Peak District National Park.

Horse Riding & Trekking

See the spectacular scenery from horseback with riding available locally for all ages and experience. Lane End Farm offer their highlight of an amazing trek up onto Abney Moor where you can have a picnic and enjoy the breathtaking views of Ladybower and Win Hill in the distance.

Whilst Ladybooth Farm offer fine views of both Edale and the Hope Valley, treks over Jaggers Clough to Win Hill, Back Tor and up towards Mam Tor or down through the scented pine forests to the beauty of the Derwent Valley.


Longshaw Estate

A wonderful place to discover breath taking views of the Peak District providing excellent walking country with ancient woods, parkland, heather moorland and tumbling streams. The spectacular White Edge Moor overlooks the Derwent Valley and forms part of the long gritstone edge stretching from Stanage towards Birchens Edge south of Chatsworth House.


Monsal Trail

Distance: From Buttercup Cottage, the nearest access point is by the bridge at the bottom Main Street – turn right as you leave the cottage

The Monsal Trail is a popular route for walking and cycling, linking Bakewell to Blackwell Mill in Chee Dale, near Buxton. The recently reopened railway tunnels now enable you to experience the full 8.5 miles of the former railway route at your own pace and see breathtaking views at places like Water-cum-Jolly Dale that have remained hidden since the railway closed in 1968.

Bakewell has a small public swimming baths, great if you need some aqua exercise or something to do with the kids.

At certain times there are sessions in the pool and gym that will not be suitable for you, so check the pool timetable and gym timetable before visiting to make sure of availability.

There are many beautiful walks right from the doorstep of Buttercup Cottage and further afield, a selection of good guide books are available in the cottage to get you started. Bolsover Castle, a medieval fortress was founded in the 12th century by the Peverel family, who also owned Peverel Castle in Castleton. Highlights include the sumptuously painted walls and ceilings of the Little Castle, intricately carved fireplaces and the magnificent indoor Riding House.

Visit one or all of the four show caverns in Castleton. Take an amazing boat trip 450m under the hills of Castleton to the awesome Bottomless Pit or take a walk into the notorious Devils Arse! The caverns are only a short distance from the centre of Castleton, therefore the distance quoted above is to the main Visitor Centre in Castleton.
